Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Kevin Johnson died at a homeless encampment from blunt head trauma and stab wounds, according to the medical examiner.

The Los Angeles County medical examiner said that 55-year-old Johnson was pronounced dead on Wednesday morning after he was found unconscious. His death has been ruled a homicide and is under investigation.

In the 1993 draft he was selected in the fourth round by the New England Patriots. Johnson also played for the Patriots, Minnesota Vikings, and Oakland Raiders before joining the Eagles. In two seasons with Philadelphia he recorded 43 tackles, including seven sacks, and also returned a fumble for a touchdown.

After that Johnson played in the Arena Football League for Orlando and Los Angeles. He was born in Los Angeles and attended Texas Southern University.

Investigators believe that Johnson was living in a homeless encampment at the time of his death. Friends note that he had health problems later in life that could have affected his condition. The investigation is ongoing.
