Anthony Lynn has emerged as a surprise candidate in the Bills’ head coach search

The Buffalo Bills have had a crazy week to say the least. After losing to the Denver Broncos in their divisional round playoff matchup, the team moved quickly to fire head coach Sean McDermott. As a result, the Bills have begun looking for a new leader for their team, and a surprising new candidate has emerged from out of nowhere.

Every single day this week, Buffalo has managed to find itself in the news for one reason or another. On Friday, the team caught attention for interviewing recently retired quarterback Philip Rivers for its head coach opening. Now, the Bills have interviewed one of Rivers’ former coaches, Anthony Lynn, who is currently the Washington Commanders‘ running backs coach.

The Bills are in a bit of an odd spot when it comes to their head coach search. On one hand, there’s no doubt that this position is desirable, given the fact that whoever gets hired will be working alongside superstar quarterback Josh Allen. Considering how late the team moved on from McDermott, though, that has put Buffalo in a bit of a tight spot when it comes to finding his replacement.

That has led to some unexpected candidates emerging. Lynn is perhaps the most surprising of the bunch, as he has fallen off the map a bit in recent years. Lynn is most well-known for his stint with the Los Angeles Chargers, but after getting fired in 2020, he’s bounced around the league working in various assistant-level roles.

He may not seem like the most obvious candidate, but Lynn was with the Bills in 2015 and 2016, where he eventually ended up becoming their interim head coach after Rex Ryan was fired late in his second season with the team. Now, he’s got a shot to earn the real job, as Buffalo revealed that it interviewed Lynn for their head coach opening on Saturday, adding another intriguing option to the mix.

“We have completed an interview with Anthony Lynn for our head coaching position,” the Bills announced in a post on X.

The decision to interview Lynn is a bit of a surprise for the Bills. While he has experience with the team and as a head coach, Buffalo is the only team to interview Lynn for a head coach opening in this cycle. There’s no doubt he’s regarded as a strong offensive mind, but Lynn’s stint with the Chargers ended so poorly that it has been tough for him to build his way back up as a coach in the eyes of the rest of the league.

Buffalo’s familiarity with Lynn is worth noting, though, and there’s a chance that it could be eyeing him as its offensive coordinator should Joe Brady end up taking a job elsewhere. But considering the uproar the team has faced in the wake of their decision to fire McDermott, it’s tough to see them turning to Lynn as his replacement. Of course, his status bears watching, but it’d be an even bigger shock if Lynn ends up being the Bills’ new head coach.
