The FBI is investigating the death of Jim Irsay, the former owner of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts, according to a new report.
The investigation, first reported by The Washington Post, centers on a doctor who provided Irsay with prescription pain pills and ketamine injections in the final months of his life, according to the outlet, which cited a federal grand jury subpoena.
Irsay, who had a well-documented history of substance abuse and spoke openly about his struggles with addiction, died last year in California. He was 65.
The Colts in a statement provided to the Post said they were “aware” of the investigation but declined to provide further comment.
The newspaper had reported before Irsay’s death that he had relapsed and was being prescribed opioids and ketamine injections from the doctor now at the center of the FBI’s probe.
Irsay was a young boy when his father acquired the family’s NFL franchise and was worth more than an estimated $4 billion at the time of his death.
