A former Dolphins coach has been hired by the Chiefs.
The Miami Dolphins‘ new head coach, Jeff Hafley, hasn’t even unpacked his bags since being hired by the team on January 19th. The first time head coach stayed in the division to find his Dolphins a new special teams coordinator.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the coach poaching late on Friday night.
“Dolphins are hiring former Bills special teams coordinator Chris Tabor as their special teams coordinator. An in-division move,” Schefter said.
Yet another position on the staff the next Bills head coach hire will have to fill.
Chris Tabor Coaching Resumé
Chris Tabor has spent more than a decade coaching at the NFL level. All nine years have been spent in the same position.
He began in 2008 as the Chicago Bears‘ assistant special teams coordinator. Three years later, he was hired and promoted to the special teams coordinator of the Cleveland Browns, where he spent seven seasons.
He then returned to Chicago for three seasons before his most interesting stint yet.
The Carolina Panthers hired him in 2021 to once again be their special teams coordinator. But when head coach Frank Reich was fired in 2022, Tabor stepped into the role as interim head coach for the remaining six games of the season.
His Panthers went 1-5 over that stretch, earning the first overall selection and drafting quarterback Bryce Young.
Job well done.
His next role came with Buffalo, where he spent only one season.
Was The Bills’ Special Teams Good This Year?
Admittedly, this humble writer is no special teams expert. But as a backup quarterback in college, I did my fair share of holding on the field goal unit.
Speaking of field goals, the Bills made the fewest in the NFL with just 19. That being said, McDermott’s squad only attempted 21, another league low.
Bills kickers were among the league’s lowest in touchback percentage, which, given the league’s new rules, is a big win.
Buffalo averaged the third most yards per return and was one of only six NFL teams to return a kick for a touchdown this season.
So by the numbers, Buffalo had one of the league’s best units.
