The Washington Commanders are still searching for their next defensive coordinator, but the coaching staff is currently focusing on the offseason. Player personnel changes will be abundant, starting with free agency in March, followed by the 2026 NFL Draft in April.
While we are in a bit of a lull, Daniel Jeremiah released his first mock draft of 2026 after the deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft passed. In his opinion, the Commanders will use their first-round draft pick to bolster their defense.
Pick 7 – Washington CommandersSonny StylesOhio State · LB · SeniorStyles reminds me of Fred Warner, who was drafted by the 49ers when current Commanders GM Adam Peters was an executive in San Francisco’s front office. Keep in mind that Bobby Wagner is 35 and headed for free agency.
Even if the Commanders retain Bobby Wagner, he’s 35 and heavily targeted on the field. He is still very capable and makes tackles, but the Commanders need to add youth to their linebacking corps.
Over his career at Ohio State, Styles recorded 245 tackles (132 solo), nine sacks, three forced fumbles, one interception, and nine pass deflections. He has disrupted opposing offenses for the last three seasons, helping the Buckeyes win the National Championship in 2024. He’s versatile, he has a nose for the ball, and he is exactly what the Commanders’ defense needs.

What the Commanders actually do in the draft remains to be seen, but they likely use their first-round pick on the defensive side of the ball. Should they go offense, though, look for a receiver to be the choice.
