Michael Carter II was acquired by the Philadelphia Eagles just a few months ago, and some seem to think it’ll be short-lived.
According to a recent projection from USA Today, the Eagles could consider moving on from the former New York Jets cornerback this offseason, a surprising decision given that he was just added to the team.

“Only Howie Roseman and Vic Fangio actually know how they view the former Jets cornerback,” Glenn Erby wrote. “Back in October, Philadelphia sent John Metchie and a 2027 sixth-round pick to the New York Jets for CB Michael Carter and a 2027 7th round pick.”
At the time of the trade, the move made sense for both sides. The Jets were gutting their roster, while the Eagles needed secondary help for a playoff push. Carter brought versatility and experience, something Howie Roseman has always looked for.
However, the on-field results weren’t as great as they should’ve been and he’s a bit expensive.

“Carter II, a fifth-year veteran, struggled in coverage this season but is under contract through 2027,” he added. “Carter signed a three-year, $30.75 million extension with the Jets through the 2027 season, and will be under team control for the next 2.5 years.”
Carter wasn’t an expiring rental, which makes the trade a bit different to look at for the Eagles. While his cap hit isn’t insane by any means, the Eagles want to ensure they have the best players out there, and he wasn’t that.
“Carter II played 106 snaps after joining the Eagles, with the most coming in Week 12 against the Cowboys (25), and the Week 18 loss to the Commanders (65),” USA Today noted. “In those games, Carter II had a 75.5 grade from PFF.”

Philadelphia has shown repeatedly that it can get off contracts, even if it has to attach a pack. If the coaching staff believes Carter doesn’t align long-term with Vic Fangio’s defense, Roseman has never been one to run away from making a deal.
Carter entered the league with the Jets as a nice player, earning a second contract through consistent play. Now, once again, he finds himself in a position to potentially be traded and join his third team in just a year.
