ENGLEWOOD – The Broncos’ season is over, but the interview season for Davis Webb is heating up.
After the Broncos lost 10-7 to New England in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game at Empower Field at Mile High, the Broncos quarterbacks coach and offensive passing game coordinator interviewed Monday for the Buffalo head coaching job. And a source said Webb, 31, will have an in-person interview Tuesday for Las Vegas’ head position after having had a remote interview three weeks ago with the Raiders.
The Bills are seeking a replacement for Sean McDermott, fired Jan. 19, two days after they lost 33-30 in overtime at Denver in a divisional playoff game. The Raiders are seeking to replace Pete Carroll, fired Jan. 5, a day after the regular season ended.
The Bills had to wait until Denver’s season was over before talking to Webb since they had not put in a request during the first week after the end of the regular season. That, of course, was before they planned to fire McDermott.
Webb was an NFL quarterback from 2017-22, including spending 2019-21 with the Bills. So they know him well.
“He’s developed a good reputation and he’s just a really smart football coach,’’ Broncos quarterback Sam Ehlinger said of Webb drawing interest as a head coach despite his young age.
Webb has worked the past two seasons with starter Bo Nix, after he was taken with the No. 12 pick in the NFL draft. Nix missed Sunday’s game after suffering a season-ending broken ankle against the Bills. He was replaced by Jarrett Stidham, who completed his third Denver season.
Ehlinger joined the Broncos last April. He has interest in re-signing with them when he becomes a free agent in March.
“We love it here,’’ he said of his family. “The organization has been nothing but great. They’ve been true to their word. … We’ll see what the opportunities look like in March, but we love it here.”
While Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph received interest from at least six NFL teams three weeks ago and had remote interviews, it remains to be seen if he will land a job as a head coach. Of the teams that had expressed interest in Joseph, Tennessee, Atlanta, Baltimore and the New York Giants have filled their openings. Joseph also talked to Arizona and Las Vegas. But the Cardinals have reportedly zeroed in on Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur as a top candidate and the Raiders might now have more interest in Webb.
Broncos sign 6 to futures contracts
The Broncos signed six players off their practice squad to futures contracts, including two who played in regular-season games in 2025.
Calvin Throckmorton, who also spent some time on the active roster, got into 10 games. Linebacker Levelle Bailey appeared in three.
Others to sign were tight end Caleb Lohner, a seventh-round pick last April out of Utah, running backs Deuce Vaughn and Cody Schrader and defensive tackle Jordan Miller.
A source said the Broncos have offered wide receiver Michael Bandy a futures deal but he is weighing possible offers from at least two other teams before he might commit to Denver. Denver’s practice squad players become street free agents next Monday if they don’t sign with Broncos this week.
A source said the Broncos are not expected to sign to a futures deal quarterback Ben DiNucci, who joined their practice squad Jan. 19 to serve as their No. 3 quarterback after Nix was hurt.
‘Tough’ season for Greenlaw
Linebacker Dre Greenlaw didn’t deny his first season with the Broncos was trying at times.
“It was just a tough transition,” he said.
Greenlaw had injury problems, missing the first six games of the regular season with a quad problem and the final two with a hamstring issue. He also missed one game due to an NFL suspension.
Greenlaw, who played his first six seasons in San Francisco under coach Kyle Shanahan before signing with the Broncos last March, also made note of now having Sean Payton in that role.
“It’s just two different personality coaches,’’ he said. “Sean’s old school. He’s going to go six days on, one day off (in training) camp. I mean, he’s got his way of doing things. You’re going to practice three hours on Wednesday (during the regular season).’’
Greenlaw was able to return from his hamstring injury for both of Denver’s playoff games.
“It was a lot of ups and downs and I’m thankful to end this season on a positive note just being healthy,’’ he said.
Lutz clarifies comment
Broncos kicker Wil Lutz went on social media Monday to clarify a comment he made after Sunday’s loss.
With the Broncos playing on a snow-covered field, Lutz said after the game his 45-yard field goal in the fourth quarter was in part blocked due to the Broncos unable to “see the lines on the field” and “we may have been a yard short on the snap.’’ The kick with 4:42 left could have tied the score 10-10.
Lutz wrote Monday that he takes “full responsibility” for the miss and the Broncos were “lined up correctly after looking at the tape.”
