The Buffalo Bills are looking for a new head coach, and some in the NFL believe the right candidate just became available.
The Buffalo Bills have been on the hunt for a new head coach after saying farewell to head coach Sean McDermott after nine seasons back on Monday, January 19.
McDermott, 51, led the Buffalo Bills to five consecutive AFC East division titles from 2020 to 2024. He also took them to the playoffs, but the team’s January 17 loss in the divisional round of the playoffs with a 33-30 defeat to the Broncos was enough to give McDermott the boot. He also held a 98-50 record with the Bills and made the postseason in eight of his nine seasons, according to Pro Football Reference research.
“For nearly a decade I have had the opportunity to wake up every morning as the Head Coach of the Buffalo Bills, which has truly been a gift,” McDermott wrote in his goodbye statement to the franchise. “I want to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Pegula family, the Buffalo Bills organization, and to the fans for allowing me to live out the dream of being a Head Coach in the NFL in this incredibly special place.”
He added, “God gave me and my family an incredible opportunity, one that we will cherish for the rest of our lives. Yet we know that He has a plan. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your head coach. God bless, Sean McDermott.”
The Buffalo Bills’ Search for a Sean McDermott Replacement
So, McDermott’s parting message was all class. Now, the hunt for his replacement is on.
Now, some in the NFL believe that the Buffalo Bills have found their new head coach in Broncos quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Davis Webb, who’s now available after Denver’s loss to the Patriots.
“The Bills are expected to interview Broncos QBs coach and passing game coordinator Davis Webb for their vacant HC job, their own former QB,” NFL insider Ian Rapoport said in a post on X. “He also has an interview with the Raiders, which should go into tomorrow.” NBC Sports also reported the news.
So, what makes Webb such a great fit with the Bills? It’s obvious. He’s a quarterbacks coach and is largely credited for helping to mold Bo Nix into the signal-caller that he is today. If Nix hadn’t gotten injured in his game against the Buffalo Bills in the NFL divisional round of the playoffs, it’s very possible that the Broncos would have beaten the Patriots in the AFC Championship. Just saying.
Sean McDermott Bids the Buffalo Bills Farewell
McDermott’s parting words with the Bills are tear-jerking. “I am proud and humbled to have worked alongside amazing staff and players as we shared life together and poured out our hearts and souls into both winning football games and making a positive impact in our community,” he wrote in his farewell statement.
He added, “This community graciously embraced not only me but my family and in some ways helped raise our children over the last nine years. For that I say thank you to all of the teachers, coaches, and friends whom we met along the way.”
