One of the Detroit Lions’ most-valued assistant coaches will have an opportunity to get a promotion elsewhere. As first reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Lions assistant head coach/wide receivers coach Scottie Montgomery has been requested to interview for the Baltimore Ravens’ offensive coordinator job.
This year, after the Lions were able to hire Tashard Choice as their running backs coach, Montgomery moved to the wide receiver room, where he continued to help develop the Lions’ young skill players. Jameson Williams took his game to another level under Montgomery. Not only did Williams post a career-high in receiving yards (1,117), but his route tree developed significantly. No longer just a deep threat, Williams became a more trusted and more versatile weapon under Montgomery.
“Scottie understands this game very well, top to bottom—pass game, protection, run game. He’s a huge asset for us and for me,” coach Dan Campbell said of Montgomery back in October.
The Ravens recently hired Jesse Minter as their new head coach, replacing John Harbaugh. As a defensive-minded coach, he’s undoubtedly looking for a trusted mind to run the offense. He doesn’t have any first-hand experience with Montgomery, but this just further proves that the Lions coach has a strong reputation across the league.
