The Buffalo Bills announced Tuesday that they’ve hired offensive coordinator Joe Brady as the team’s next head coach.

Fans took to social media and largely voiced their displeasure with the move just eight days after the polarizing decision by Bills owner Terry Pegula to fire longtime coach Sean McDermott.

Matt Parrino and Ryan Talbot took a deep dive into the decision and its ramifications on the latest episode of “SHOUT!” A Buffalo Football podcast.

The Bills interviewed nine different candidates and many fans seemed excited about a complete reboot of the coaching staff after McDermott’s exit. Brady has been the OC for the past two and half seasons. He took over in the middle of the 2023 season when McDermott fired former OC Ken Dorsey after a disappointing loss to the Denver Broncos.

The “SHOUT!” hosts discussed the Bills’ apparent belief that McDermott—not the offensive system—was holding them back from making it to a Super Bowl. The guys also talked about the pressure Brady faces in a season with Super Bowl aspirations. After all, he’s following a coach who won five straight AFC East championships and took Buffalo to two AFC title games.

Brady reportedly nailed the interview with Bills’ brass. Brady emphasized alignment on roster construction and player utilization. That synergy could unlock the final piece of Buffalo’s championship puzzle, the hosts said.

With Brady now in place, the first mission for the new Bills coach is filling out his coaching staff. The guys broke down a few different candidates for defensive coordinator and some options to help assist Brady on the offensive side. The first-year coach is reportedly planning to continue to call plays as a head coach.
