Even through the intense contract negotiations, the New York Giants always knew that John Harbaugh was going to be their guy.
However, Giants general manager Joe Schoen was apparently “blown away” by Denver Broncos assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi during his interview.
Originally from New Jersey, Rizzi began coaching in 1993 for Colgate as a graduate assistant. He would make stops at New Haven, Northeastern, Rutgers, and Rhode Island at the collegiate level before entering the NFL.
Rizzi made the jump to the NFL in 2008 when he joined the Miami Dolphins. His experience is largely with special teams, but he has been an assistant head coach or interim head coach with both the Dolphins and New Orleans Saints, as well as in his current role with the Broncos.
While the Giants didn’t end up hiring Rizzi as head coach, that doesn’t mean they have ruled out hiring him for another position.

The Giants are still looking for an offensive coordinator and various assistant positions, so perhaps Schoen and Harbaugh will circle back around to Rizzi and see if he’s interested in a different role.
