Mike McCarthy isn’t completely making over the Pittsburgh Steelers’ coaching staff. After being introduced as the team’s new head coach on Tuesday, it was reported that he’s keeping a few of former leader Mike Tomlin’s assistants around in the Steel City.
“Mike McCarthy expected to bring back three members of Mike Tomlin’s staff — linebackers coach Scott McCurley, who was on his staff in Dallas; QB coach Tom Arth and secondary coach Gerald Alexander, per sources,” the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac wrote Wednesday on X.
McCurley hopped to Pittsburgh before this past season after five seasons under McCarthy with the Cowboys. Arth has tutored the Steelers’ signal-callers for the past two seasons. If Aaron Rodgers decides to come back for a second year in Pittsburgh, he’ll have some familiarity there.

Alexander returned to take over the Steelers’ secondary this past season after having previously served as an assistant defensive backs coach for Tomlin from 2022-23.
Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot wrote Wednesday on X that the Steelers have requested to interview Browns special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone for the same position. Ventrone is a Pittsburgh native, having graduated from Chartiers Valley High School.
The Steelers have already hired Adam Henry as their new receivers coach, replacing Zach Azzanni. Henry previously worked under McCarthy with the Cowboys from 2020-21 before heading to Indiana University to take over as a co-offensive coordinator.
