Jimmy Johnson knows a thing or two about the difficulty of being the Cowboys’ head coach.
He spent five seasons coaching the Cowboys under Jerry Jones and won two Super Bowls. As for current Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer … well, who knows if any Super Bowls are in his future, but he did better than 1-15 in his rookie NFL head coaching season, so he’s got Johnson beat there.
Johnson recently stopped by “The Pat McAfee Show” where, after he was finished ripping into the Pro Football Hall of Fame selection committee re: Bill Belichick, he got into his former team in Dallas, the job that Schottenheimer did in his rookie year and what the Cowboys have to do to get back to the glory days of Johnson’s Cowboys in the ‘90s.
Here’s what Jimmy had to say:
Cowboys
Question: How do you feel about the state of the Cowboys? Where do you think they go from here with Dak, CeeDee, hopefully Pickens?
Johnson: “As far as the Cowboys, you know, Brian Schottenheimer did an outstanding job in a difficult situation last year, they were just horrible on defense. I think if they can make some corrections on defense, in fact I talked to Jerry Jones not too awful long ago, after the season, I said ‘You can make some corrections on defense.’
“And, you know, it may not be that you’re gonna be dominant, but if you’re just ‘good.’ Just ‘so-so.’ You’re gonna be so good on offense, if you can keep Pickens and get the running back situation going, you can have an outstanding team. You can make a run at it, because you’re that good offensively. But they’ve gotta make the corrections on defense.”
