The Cleveland Browns have a problem. While their head coaching search didn’t go to plan, they did land Todd Monken, who was viewed as a strong candidate this cycle.

But the issue is now that Jim Schwartz, the defensive coordinator who had a chance to land the Browns HC job, was passed up for Monken, and now, he wants out of Cleveland.
According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, one NFL source believes the Browns should do a ridiculous idea to appease Schwartz, while still keeping Monken. This league source believes the Browns should have co-head coaches.
Browns could make Schwartz, Monken co-head coaches
“One league source just told me in his opinion, the Browns should do something different: make Todd Monken & Jim Schwartz co-head coaches, to assuage this conundrum,” Anderson writes. “Monken co-head coach of offense, Schwartz co-head coach of defense.”

This idea from a league source would make for a stunning turn of events. While keeping Schwartz would be ideal for the Browns, having Monken and Schwartz as co-head coaches could lead to a lot of problems.
For starters, it would completely shatter the perception of what it means to be a head coach in the NFL. There have never been co-head coaches before, like what this source is urging the Browns to do.
In theory, if there weren’t any issues between the two coaches, and they were in lockstep all of the time, then it could work. But that’s only in theory, and in very specific and ideal circumstances.

In reality, it’s completely impractical. Not only would the Browns now have two voices having a lot of say in how the team runs, but the offense and defense would be more apart than ever. It would effectively be like two teams on one roster.
But what would make this even more illogical is that, during a game, who would be responsible for calling timeouts? Who will have more say about going for it, kicking field goals, and other big in-game decisions?
Two voices will make things a whole lot more challenging. It’s a fun concept, and in a perfect situation, it could, potentially, work. But, with Schwartz and Monken, given how things have gone just a day into his hiring, it’s not a possibility.
While this league source is telling Anderson this is what the Browns should do, co-head coaches doesn’t make any sense for the Browns. Monken is the head coach, and either Schwartz returns as DC, or he leaves. Co-head coaches will never work in the NFL.
