Dive into the impact of Atlanta hiring Chicago Assistant GM Ian Cunningham as their GM and what that means for the Bears.
While the Chicago Bears have been bracing for coaching departures this offseason, they will also now need to fill the void of Assistant General Manager as Ian Cunningham will be hired as the new General Manager of the Atlanta Falcons.
After being hired as General Manager of the Chicago Bears back in 2022, one of Ryan Poles’ first moves was hiring Ian Cunningham as his Assistant GM, where Cunningham has been instrumental in Chicago’s rebuild. Prior to coming to Chicago, Cunningham was with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2017 through 2021 as the Director of College Scouting until ultimately becoming the Director of Player Personnel. As Poles’ right hand man the past four seasons, Cunningham has been imperative in shaping the current Bears roster which has just won their first playoff game since 2010. Whether it was trades, free agency, or the draft, Cunningham was heavily involved in personnel decisions and Chicago now has some big shoes to fill.
As an ascending executive in the NFL, Cunningham has been in the running for GM positions in previous years, including being a finalist for the Jacksonville GM position a year ago. Now, the 40 year old finally gets his well-deserved opportunity in Atlanta.
So what does this mean for the Bears? Unfortunately, Chicago will not be receiving any compensatory draft picks for losing Cunningham to Atlanta. It was speculated that Chicago would receive two third round picks spread out over the next two drafts, but that will not be the case. Cunningham is being hired as the secondary football executive in Atlanta behind team President Matt Ryan, hence no draft picks for Chicago.
