Mike McDaniel’s leadership skills came into question

After four seasons with the team, the Miami Dolphins decided to part ways with Mike McDaniel. The decision came after the team posted back-to-back seasons below .500 and missed the playoffs on both occasions. In McDaniel’s first two seasons, the Miami Dolphins possessed an explosive, high-powered offense under him. However, both seasons ended with late-season collapses and first-round playoff defeats.

When the Dolphins originally hired McDaniel, the move was seen as surprising considering he had spent only one year as an offensive coordinator with the 49ers. McDaniel had not called plays in San Francisco but had been credited with Deebo Samuel’s success as a hybrid receiver and running back. The hire was also questioned as his quirky personality went viral, and people did not seem to think he could be a leader of men. That criticism of McDaniel lasted throughout his tenure in Miami as halfway through the 2025 season he was called out by Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd for his personality.

Former Miami Dolphins Player Speaks Out on McDaniel

Now, with the team having moved on from McDaniel, former players are commenting on what it was like to play for a coach with a quirky personality. Former Dolphins long-snapper Blake Ferguson, who played under McDaniel for three seasons, went on The Dive Bar Podcast where he was asked about McDaniel’s leadership skills. Ferguson said, “The leash had gotten too long… When you allow players to have a voice in the locker room and control a lot of how every single day runs, you leave yourself vulnerable to that getting out of control quickly.”

What Ferguson is saying should mark no surprise to people who followed the team closely these past few years. Superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill quit on the Dolphins in their 2024 regular season finale as he took himself out of the game and later requested a trade; he would then retract his statements.

The team also made a point of emphasis in the 2025 season on having better leadership. Captain Bradley Chubb said the team had previously lied about having a culture change in 2024, but that they would try to improve on that in 2025. Additionally, Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey clashed with Mike McDaniel and it resulted in the Dolphins having to trade the defensive back a year after signing his extension.

Mike McDaniel’s Replacement

Throughout the 2025 season, the Dolphins held a players-only meeting after their Week 1 blowout loss to the Colts. Then halfway through the season, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa called out his teammates as he said they were not attending player-led meetings or showing up late. McDaniel had said player tardiness had been an issue in the 2024 season, and that fining players did not fix the issue. Ultimately, the Dolphins rallied as they finished the 2025 season on a 6-3 run, but it was not enough to save McDaniel’s job.

After firing McDaniel, the Dolphins went with someone who appears to be a polar opposite. New head coach Jeff Hafley presents himself as a leader who preaches toughness and had previously specialized on the defensive side of the ball. His speaking skills were one of the reasons the Dolphins were drawn to him in their interview.

Hafley is also more experienced than McDaniel when he took the job. Miami’s new head coach was previously a head coach at the college level as he led Boston College for four seasons. He then served two seasons as a defensive coordinator in Green Bay before coming to Miami.
