The Pittsburgh Steelers will interview New Orleans Saints quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien for the team’s offensive coordinator position, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports.
The Steelers have notified the Saints that they plan to interview assistant Scott Tolzien for offensive coordinator, per sources.

He is the second known candidate for the role, joining Dallas Cowboys TEs Coach Lunda Wells. Wells has a virtual interview with the Steelers today.
Tolzien was listed among our group of candidates to become Pittsburgh’s offensive coordinator. A former quarterback at Wisconsin who got by with his football intelligence instead of elite physical tools, Tolzien broke into coaching at his alma mater in 2019. Mike McCarthy hired him as a Dallas Cowboys assistant in 2020. After three years in the role, McCarthy promoted him to quarterbacks coach.
In 2023, QB Dak Prescott threw for 4,516 yards and 36 touchdowns. He finished second in the MVP voting. After Prescott was injured the following year, backup Cooper Rush played well, throwing for 12 touchdowns and five interceptions as the Cowboys went a respectable 4-4 without their starting quarterback.
From 2013-2015, Tolzien also played quarterback for McCarthy in Green Bay. He appeared in six games, starting two, but struggling with one touchdown pass and five interceptions.
In 2025, Tolzien was named the New Orleans Saints’ quarterbacks coach. There, he worked with rookie Tyler Shough, who came on strong late in the season and looks like a true building block of the future. Shough finished the year with 10 touchdown passes, six interceptions, and a 5-4 record. He and the Saints won three of their last four games. Over that span, Shough threw five touchdown passes and just one interception.
At 38 years old, Tolzien is regarded as a riser in the coaching ranks. He would be a strong hire as Pittsburgh’s next offensive coordinator. A trio of Mike McCarthy, Tolzien, and QBs coach Tom Arth – who is expected to remain in Pittsburgh – would be a strong staff for any quarterback to learn from. Especially a young one like Will Howard or a potential draft pick.
Tolzien is currently at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama as the offensive coordinator for the American Team. The squad’s quarterbacks are: LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier, Arkansas’ Taylen Green, and Illinois’ Luke Altmeyer. Nussmeier already has connections to McCarthy, making him a name to watch this draft season.
