FOXBOROUGH, Mass. —
New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel addressed the media on Friday ahead of their Super Bowl 60 matchup with the Seattle Seahawks on Feb. 8 in Santa Clara, California.
Friday was the team’s final practice before they head to the West Coast.
Quarterback Drake Maye was not seen during the media-access portion of practice, which is typically stretching and field goal work.
Vrabel said Maye missed practice with an illness as well as a shoulder injury.
“A lot of guys the last six weeks dealing with illnesses,” Vrabel said.
The coach confirmed Maye showed up to work, saying in part that he was “fine” and that the only reason he didn’t practice was because of the illness.
Similarly, Maye’s teammates didn’t seem overly concerned.
“In my career… I’ve seen that that’s not a weird thing, you know, that happens sometimes through the ebbs and flows of the NFL season,” said backup quarterback Josh Dobbs. “Luckily for us it hasn’t happened up until this point so of course it’s going to be magnified.”
Offensive tackle Morgan Moses said no one in the locker room is worried.
“I don’t think anybody’s worried about the nooks and crannies of what’s going on,” he said. “I think, you know, a lot of guys, when those lights turn on and that national anthem is going, they’ll forget about all the pain because it’ll be worth it at the end.”
Maye was listed as a limited participant in practice all week with a right shoulder injury.
Many suspect he injured it during a third-quarter scramble against the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game.
Despite his injury status, Maye insisted he had a normal practice Thursday.
“Got out there moving around for a good bit [Thursday],” Maye said. “We did a jog through, so I’m feeling good and looking forward to being ready to go. This is the game you dream of playing, so looking forward to getting out there and playing in the Super Bowl.”
