OLATHE, Kan. (KCTV) – The Olathe City Council is holding a public hearing regarding incentives for the Kansas City Chiefs to move the team’s headquarters and practice facility to Olathe on Tuesday, Feb. 3.
The meeting follows news in December 2025, when the Chiefs announced they were moving to Kansas by the 2031 season.
Along with the Olathe plans, the Chiefs are also planning to build a new stadium in Wyandotte County.
To make this plan happen, the team is looking at Sales Tax and Revenue Bonds, known as STAR Bonds.
At Tuesday’s Olathe City Council meeting, there will be a public hearing on the Chiefs’ plan to use STAR Bonds to help make the project happen.
The City is looking at pledging certain revenues to the project for land at the northwest corner of College Boulevard and Ridgeview Road.
This pledge would be new revenues in that area would go to the STAR Bonds. They are looking at these pledges:
For a period of up to thirty (30) years, all of the City’s general sales and use tax that is not committed to other uses by election of voters or pledged to bond repayment (currently 1%) from within the Base Revenue Area.For a period of up to thirty (30) years, all of the City’s share (currently 17.63%) of the Johnson County sales tax that is not committed to other uses by election of voters or pledged to bond repayment (currently 0.5%) from within the Base Revenue Area.For a period of up to thirty (30) years, 7% of the City’s current 9% transient guest taxes (less any State administrative fees) with respect to sleeping accommodations in any hotel, motel, or tourist court located within the Base Revenue Area.
KCTV5 Investigates reached out to the Olathe Mayor and all City Council members.
Tuesday the Olathe City Council will hold a public hearing and consider an ordinance to pledge local incremental sales tax from the project area to the Chiefs headquarters and training facility project in Olathe. This development provides a lot of potential benefits for our city, in the immediate area of where it’s being developed and beyond. I’m excited about the possibilities it brings to Olathe.
Olathe At-Large City Councilman Matthew Schoonover shared a statement ahead of the meeting:
“This could be a transformative project for Olathe, but we will consider both short and long-term impacts to make sure it makes financial sense for our residents. I look forward to learning more about the proposal.”
Mayor Pro Tem Dean Vakas said he did not have any comment at this time.
The Chiefs did not respond to KCTV5 regarding the meeting and whether the team plans to have a representative present.
The meeting is set for Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers at 100 E. Santa Fe in Olathe.
