The Broncos’ staff shakeup continues.

Pete Carmichael — a senior offensive assistant for coach Sean Payton — is leaving Denver to become the Bills offensive coordinator, a source told The Denver Gazette.

Carmichael was the longtime Saints offensive coordinator from 2009-23 before reuniting with Payton over the last two seasons in Denver. The Bills promoted Joe Brady to head coach earlier this week. Brady spent the 2017 NFL season as an offensive assistant under Payton and Carmichael in New Orleans.

The Broncos will move ahead with major staff changes, especially for the offense, entering 2026.

Denver parted ways with offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and wide receivers coach Keary Colbert earlier this week. Quarterbacks coach Davis Webb withdrew his consideration Thursday for the Raiders head coaching vacancy.

It is possible Webb is a candidate to replace Lombardi as offensive coordinator. The Broncos also interviewed Bills quarterbacks coach Ronald Curry on Thursday for that role.

Johnson interviewed

The Broncos have interviewed Brian Johnson for their offensive coordinator vacancy, a source told The Denver Gazette on Friday.

Johnson served as the Commanders’ passing game coordinator over the last two seasons. He rose to prominence on the Eagles coaching staff as quarterbacks coach (2021-22) and offensive coordinator (2023). Johnson is credited with helping develop Super Bowl-winning quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Denver is now compliant with the NFL’s Rooney Rule — requiring at least two minority coaching candidates for coordinator openings — with the Broncos also interviewing Curry.

Broncos quarterbacks coach Davis Webb is considered a strong internal candidate. He withdrew from consideration for the Raiders head coaching vacancy earlier this week.
