Even at 37 years old, Kirk Cousins is expected to be a hot commodity in free agency.
According to The Athletic, the Falcons are expected to release Cousins this offseason. That’s not a huge surprise considering he’s due another $67.9 million for the 2027 season that vests by March 13. This move was set into motion when Cousins agreed to a modified contract with the Falcons earlier this month. Although he’ll lose out on money for 2027, it’ll open the door for him to start in 2026.

Cousins filled in well for Michael Penix Jr. during the 2025 season, completing 61.7% of his passes this season for 1,721 yards with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. The Falcons went 5-3 with him as their starter.
Since it’s unlikely any other team would want to take on the guaranteed money on Cousins’ contract, he’ll most likely hit the open market. With that being said, there are three landing spots that make a ton of sense for him.

It’s no secret the Minnesota Vikings regret their decision to let Sam Darnold leave in free agency. While a reunion with Cousins wouldn’t erase that mistake, it would give Justin Jefferson a much more reliable option at quarterback.

Let’s not forget that Cousins had three Pro Bowl seasons in Minnesota. Not only is he familiar with the culture there, he’s got experience playing in Kevin O’Connell’s system.
Indianapolis would be a fine option.
The Indianapolis Colts proved during the season that Shane Steichen’s offensive scheme can thrive with respectable quarterback play. Unfortunately, Daniel Jones suffered a torn Achilles in early December.
If the Colts aren’t confident in Jones returning for Week 1, they could pursue Cousins in the offseason. They can’t be picky at that position, especially since they signed Philip Rivers mid-season.

From Cousins’ perspective, the Colts would offer him a dynamic rushing attack with Jonathan Taylor, an emerging star at tight end in Tyler Warren, and proven pass catchers in Michael Pittman Jr. and Alec Pierce.
If all else fails, the Jets need a QB.
We’re not going to sugarcoat it, the New York Jets aren’t an attractive suitor for Cousins. They have a coach on the hot seat and they’re coming off a 3-14 season.
So why would Cousins consider the Jets? Well, there’s zero competition in the quarterback room. He can enter the building and immediately become their Week 1 starter.

Also, the offensive personnel for the Jets isn’t terrible by any means. They have a legitimate star in wide receiver Garrett Wilson as well as game changers at offensive tackle in Olu Fashanu and Armand Membou.
