Baker Mayfield Shares His Zac Robinson Excitement
January 29th, 2026
The Bucs’ franchise quarterback is fired up! And no, he wasn’t talking contract extension.
Tampa Bay’s new offensive coordinator, Zac Robinson from the Sean McVay coaching tree, has Baker Mayfield thinking about how much more aggressive the Bucs’ offense will be this season, so he told the WFLA streaming show known as The Rondé Barber Show.
Barber asked Mayfield to name what McVay plays the Rams use that Mayfield wants to seee more of Tampa.
“There’s just some more, he calls it ‘keepers, boots,’ whatever you want to call it,” Mayfield said, referring to Robinson. “Some of that stuff, and just the under-center play-action. And obviously, it was hard last year without our starting five [offensive] linemen all playing at once.
“It’s hard to settle the marriage of the run and pass, but this is something that I know Zac is going to live and die by the sword. So just being able to run some of the play-action stuff and attack team downhill with the run game on top of that. We need to be more aggressive and Zac hit on that; we’re always going to play aggressive, be the attacker. And that’s the mindset with [Robinson, Sean McVay and Liam Coen]; they’re trying to guy you anytime they step on the field.”
Mayfield noted how he and Robinson have stayed in touch for years and he loves everything that the McVay tree and coaches represent after spending one-third of a season there in 2022 with Robinson as his QB coach.
“I think that’s what I realized when I got to L.A. This is the kind of system, these are the kinds of coaches I want to be around — that are truly going to adapt to the personnel, to what the guys’ strengths are and go from there,” Mayfield said.
If Mayfield is happy, then Joe is happy. That QB-OC relationship is arguably the most important on the team.
