A former Washington coach was in NFL news again, Friday.

The Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders are apparently competing against each other in an effort to hire Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak as their new head coach. Broncos quarterbacks coach Davis Webb has withdrawn his interest in the Raiders head coach position. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported that both the Cardinals and Raiders are scheduled to interview Kubiak on Saturday.

The Raiders will have the chance to select the only sure quarterback expected to be taken early in April’s 2026 NFL Draft, Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza. If Kubiak takes the Raiders job, that would leave the Cardinals as the last team to hire their head coach.

The Cardinals have interviewed for a second time Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, Anthony Weaver, the Dolphins defensive coordinator for 2024 and 2025, and Jaguars defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile. The Cardinals have an interest in fired Falcons’ head coach Raheem Morris, and get this, Commanders fans, the Cardinals, according to Breer, had a seven-hour discussion/interview with Ron Rivera.

We knew earlier in the week that the Cardinals met with Rivera. But for seven hours?

One is left to wonder if the Cardinals have observed any of Rivera’s press conferences when coaching Washington. For a man who had already been a head coach with Carolina, Rivera surprisingly often seemed to be unprepared for basic questions that were of significance. He was at times defensive toward the nearly harmless Washington media. By that, I don’t mean they were incompetent. No, but they were not vicious and snarky like some other NFL media cities.

Remember how Rivera undeniably signaled to the rest of the NFL he was a desperate buyer for a quarterback? Remember his reaction when the media inquired about Carson Wentz breaking his finger against the Bears? Remember how he revealed talking with his wife, becoming convinced Sam Howell was an NFL QB1? Even worse, remember that Rivera wasn’t aware that the Commanders could be eliminated from playoff contention after a home loss to the Browns? Remember how he went back to Wentz to start that game, apparently also unaware that the Commanders’ locker room was committed to Taylor Heinicke?

We aren’t even talking about Rivera’s stint as the unofficial GM in Washington.

But perhaps the Cardinals might be unaware, as Rivera often has been?
