The Pittsburgh Steelers have hired former Atlanta Falcons chief of staff of coaching operations Steve Scarnecchia, the son of former New England Patriots legendary offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia, for Mike McCarthy new staff, according to NFL insider Aaron Wilson.
It’s unclear what role Scarnecchia will have on McCarthy’s staff.
Scarnecchia had several duties as the Falcons’ chief of staff of coaching operations. Some of his responsibilities included logistics and scheduling: Coordinating the team’s daily meeting and practice schedules, as well as the overall football calendar. Budget management: Managing the football operations budget. Event orchestration: Organizing team and staff events. Administrative support: Providing administrative assistance to the coaching and operations staff.

Prior to his second stint in Atlanta, Scarnecchia spent three seasons (2021-23) as chief of staff with the New York Jets. Scarnecchia’s first stint with the Falcons was for six seasons from 2015-20, serving as an assistant to the head coach, who was Dan Quinn.
Scarnecchia also worked with the Denver Broncos and Patriots. Scarnecchia was fired from the Broncos for taping the San Francisco 49ers’ walk-through practice in 2010. The NFL fined the Broncos $50,000 and head coach Josh McDaniels $50,000 for the incident in which it was found Scarnecchia filmed six minutes of the San Francisco walk-through.
Scarnecchia worked in the Patriots video department from 2001-04, so he was also a part of the Spygate scandal. The NFL viewed Scarnecchia as a “repeat offender.”
According to Syracuse’s official website, “Scarnecchia spent 10 years managing video operations at the college and professional levels. Scarnecchia’s NFL experience includes serving as a video director and director of multimedia for several professional teams and Division I programs, as well as a season spent abroad in a similar role with the NFL Europe.”
Scarnecchia joined the Orange football program as the video coordinator in 2011 and shifted to the director of operations position in January 2013. He was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program, including the overall management of the football budget, team travel, bowl game coordination, and The Scott Shafer Football Camps. In addition, he is responsible for game day management, the coordination and planning of team events and special projects related to the football program. .
Scarnecchia earned his bachelor’s degree in television, radio and film from Syracuse’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications while graduating cum laude in 2000.
