Head coach John Harbaugh of walks off the field following the Ravens loss to the Houston Texans.

When John Harbaugh first took the New York Giants job, he envisioned his Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator, Todd Monken, joining him in New York.

Instead, Monken was hired as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns, to Jim Schwartz’s dismay.

Harbaugh pivoted and has cast a wide net in his search for New York’s next offensive coordinator.

Well, one name was taken off the board Monday, when the Denver Broncos announced they were promoting pass game coordinator Davis Webb to their own offensive coordinator position, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Webb, the former Giants backup quarterback, was highly sought after in this year’s assistant coach hiring process.

Davis Webb Passes on the Giants to Stay in Denver

Harbaugh didn’t have any previous connections with Webb, so it was always unlikely he would be able to lure him to the New York Giants.

But the interview request was at least worth a shot, if nothing more than to pick his brain and see what his interest would be in returning to the team that drafted him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Since his playing days, Webb has always been heralded as a brilliant offensive mind, so much so that former Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott tried hiring him too early, when he was trying to make his career as a player.

“Probably had a week to think about it. I think you always kind of look in the future on off days and I’ve always known I was gonna do that eventually,” Webb said in 2021 via the New York Post’s Paul Schwartz.

“But when you got two contracts to keep playing, that’s something you would regret down the road I think. You can coach forever but you can’t play forever.”

Following one last season as the third-string quarterback for the Giants in 2023, Sean Payton hired him as his quarterbacks coach with the Denver Broncos.

Broncos quarterback Bo Nix attributes a lot of his success to Webb’s coaching and praises him every chance he gets to the media.

“He’s helped me in two years just consolidate, make things simple, and just keep the main thing the main thing. Taking a lot of information, a lot of knowledge, and been able to just roll right into it. I think highly of him. I know he’s a really good football coach,” Nix said via the Broncos official website.

So… Who Will the Giants’ Offensive Coordinator Be?

With Webb off the board, the New York Giants and Harbaugh will turn their attention to their other offensive coordinator candidates.

So far, they’ve reportedly interviewed former Washington Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury, former Tennessee Titans HC Brian Callahan, Indianapolis Colts pass game coordinator Alex Tanney, OC Jim Bob Cooter, and Los Angeles Chargers quarterbacks coach Shane Day.

There’s a lot of experience among the potential candidates, and working with Harbaugh is likely quite the draw.

It doesn’t hurt that there’s an exciting young quarterback in the mix as well, with Jaxson Dart, creating an attractive opportunity for prospective offensive coordinators.
