Scott Tolzien will not become the Pittsburgh Steelers’ next offensive coordinator. Per CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, Tolzien is staying with the New Orleans Saints as the team’s quarterbacks coach.
Tolzien interviewed for the position on Monday. A day later, he’s no longer in the mix.

It’s not clear if the Steelers helped nudge the decision by potentially informing him they planned on going in a different direction at offensive coordinator or if Tolzien pulled himself out of the running. Either way, Pittsburgh will look elsewhere for the first offensive coordinator under Mike McCarthy.
Speaking to reporters, including our Ross McCorkle, at the Senior Bowl, Tolzien expressed gratitude for his time in New Orleans.
“I’m lucky that I’m in the position that I enjoy where I’m at, things are going really good, and yet, you always see what’s out there,” he said.
He’ll continue coaching alongside Kellen Moore, whom he worked with in Dallas.
Tolzien was viewed as an exciting potential hire. At just 38 years old, he’s become a fast riser through the coaching rankings. He began coaching in 2019 and earned his first NFL job a year later when McCarthy hired him as an assistant with the Dallas Cowboys. In 2023, Tolzien was elevated to quarterbacks coach and Dak Prescott had a career season. In 2025, Tolzien became the New Orleans Saints’ quarterbacks coach, helping develop rookie Tyler Shough, who had an impressive end to his season.
The two known remaining candidates for Pittsburgh’s OC job are Cowboys TEs coach Lunda Wells and Minnesota Vikings TEs coach/pass game coordinator Brian Angelichio. Last night, beat writer Mark Kaboly called Angelichio a “strong contender” for the job. He’s yet to interview with the Steelers but is expected to meet the team within the coming days.
No matter who becomes offensive coordinator, McCarthy will continue to call plays but his OC will be a key assistant in game planning and preparation.
