Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) – The Buffalo Bills have officially ushered in the Joe Brady era as he was named the head coach just over a week ago. He has already been busy putting his staff together with Jim Leonhard coming in as the defensive coordinator and Pete Carmichael Jr. as the offensive coordinator.
Brady, now the youngest head coach in the NFL at 36 years old, comes at a time where many teams looking to change things up look to a younger option, like Ben Johnson with the Chicago Bears. Brady spoke on the trend of younger coaching candidates now getting more of a look.
“I remember after my first year in Carolina I had six interviews. And I’m looking back now and I’m like, was I ready to actually do that? I’m in such a better headspace now,” Brady said on the Jeremy and Joe show. “There are so many different things that come into play. The trends of the leagues change. We’ve got to make sure that we evolve. And I think some of the younger coaches, we don’t know any better besides making sure that we’re trying to stay ahead of the curve, or trying to continue to grow. As opposed to this is just how we’ve done it for a long time.”
Brady inherits the Buffalo Bills in extremely good shape. The longest active playoff berth streak in the league at seven years, Josh Allen at the quarterback position, and not to mention a brand-new building they are moving into. Sean McDermott built much of this up to the current standard and Brady fully acknowledged that.
“Look, you don’t get to do what Coach McDermott did for as long as he did without being a great leader. You think about all the different things that have happened during his time. I said it in the press conference, I know I’m walking into this building every day, and it’s in a way better position than it was when he walked into it. The way that he was able to help put together the foundation and establish the culture and get it to where we’re in the playoffs every year. You don’t do that by just just rolling out of bed, he’s he’s an incredible leader.”
There have now been a few iterations of Brady’s offense with different groups of Buffalo Bills around Allen at quarterback. The defense also will more than likely look very different with Leonhard’s style vs. McDermott’s. Brady says that it’s too early to tell what the next version of the Buffalo Bills could look like.
“Full transparency, it’s too early to say that. This is part of what we do in the offseason. Our offense looked different this past year than it did the year before. There’s going to be new pieces on our offense, our defense is going to be different. The thing that we always just concern ourselves is, what’s it going to take to win that football game?”
