While some might say that the Los Angeles Chargers are set at the wide receiver position, there’s always a chance they could be on the lookout for more elite talent. That is why according to Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballantine, the Chargers could be in on one of the league’s most underrated wide receivers.

Ballantine believes that the Chargers could be a potential trade destination for Bears wideout DJ Moore. While this could potentially mean that franchise legend Keenan Allen would not be re-signed, it could also mean that Justin Herbert would be getting an elite weapon that can threaten defenses on the outside.

Add in the fact that the Chargers did not have a 1,000 yard receiver or rusher last season and the need for a boost in the skill positions could be necessary for this offense to kick into high gear.

Ballantine writes, “”A veteran wide receiver might be on the Chargers wish list after funneling 122 targets to 33-year-old Keenan Allen this season. DJ Moore will be 29 this season and could work after seeing his role cut in Chicago with Rome Odunze and Luther Burden developing.”

For a team where a kind of sophomore slump set into the wide receiver corps, Moore would be a leader that can also carry the production load for this team if need be. After all, Ladd McConkey, while having a stellar rookie season, did not break the 800 yard mark last year.

Is DJ Moore Worth the Financial Commitment for Los Angeles?

DJ Moore however, did show signs of decline, or perhaps, that he was just in a highly elite receiving corps where he did not get the bulk of the targets. Despite team wide success, Moore only caught fifty passes on the year for 682 yards and 6 touchdowns, his worst statistical year since his rookie season.

The Chargers must also consider a potentially significant cap hit should they be in on a trade for Moore. It could rise as high as 25 million dollars for every season he is signed. For a team with a lot of cap space and a lot of issues to address, Moore might not be their number one priority, especially considering the market for wide receivers compared to other positions of need.

How Moore Could Reshape the Chargers’ Wide Receiver Hierarchy

Still, a hypothetical WR room that includes McConkey, Moore, and Quentin Johnston could threaten defenses in a way that no other group really can in the league. With McConkey’s short area quickness, he can remain Herbert’s security blanket in short-yardage situations. Johnston, on the other hand, would remain the Charger’s best downfield threat. Moore caps it all off as their jack of all trades at the position.

This could ultimately be a trade that suits both teams. With the Chargers potentially looking for a younger option at the position, Moore would make a lot of sense. So too for the Bears, as it would offer them some much-needed cap relief and a chance to diagnose other problems of need. While it may not be at the top of the list for the Chargers, look for it to be a sneaky addition if they do pick him up.
