ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Joe Brady is speaking to the media now, shortly after the new defensive coordinator. Watch live below:
The Buffalo Bills’ new defensive coordinator spoke on Thursday about his vision for the team’s defensive unit and the relationships he plans to build with players.
It comes amid some major coaching changes, following the team’s loss in the playoffs. Jim Leonhard, who played a decade in the NFL as a safety before becoming a coach, said he envisions a defense that’s “constantly evolving” throughout a game and a season.
“We’re going to be aggressive. We’re not going to be reckless. There is a right and a wrong way to attack quarterbacks in the NFL and it changes a little bit week to week based on their skillsets and you have to play to the strengths of your players,” he said.
Leonhard began his career with the Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2005 and played his second-to-last season with the Bills in 2013. He said that, during his time playing football, he’s seen how important it is for coaches to build trust with players.
“I went from team to team a lot. I went to a lot of different locker rooms. I was like, how can I earn the trust and respect of this group quickly? That was my goal going in and that will be my goal as a coach,” he said.
Leonhard’s conference comes about a week after Joe Brady, the Bills’ new head coach, addressed reporters for the first time. Brady said he plans to build upon the foundation that former head coach Sean McDermott laid out. The Bills owner, Terry Pegula, decided to fire McDermott after nine seasons following the loss to the Denver Broncos in the playoffs.
Leonhard said he has upmost respect of all McDermott has accomplished and the roster he has built. You can watch Leonhard’s full conference here:
