Baker spent two seasons in Pittsburgh, following then-offensive coordinator Arthur Smith from the Atlanta Falcons to Pittsburgh. Though labeled as an offensive assistant, he primarily worked with the quarterbacks. During training camp, he assisted QBs Coach Tom Arth through drills. Arth was one of two coaches retained by new head coach Mike McCarthy.
Previously, Baker coached at Western Michigan and John Carroll, Arth’s alma mater. Baker spent four years in the NFL but never appeared in a regular season game.
After losing out on NFL head coach and coordinator opportunities, Smith departed Pittsburgh to become Ohio State’s new offensive coordinator.
Baker will now work with Cleveland’s depth chart of quarterbacks. Shedeur Sanders will aim to remain the team’s starter after finishing 2025 atop the depth chart. Dillon Gabriel will battle him while Deshaun Watson remains on roster. He did not play all of last season due to a 2024 Achilles tear.
The Browns have their own coaching staff changes under new head coach Todd Monken.
Baker is the latest coach from Pittsburgh’s 2025 staff to find new work. Others include Danny Smith becoming the Tampa Bay Buccaneers special teams coordinator, Karl Dunbar the New York Jets defensive line coach, Anthony Midget an assistant at Virginia Tech, Eddie Faulkner the Baltimore Ravens running backs coach, Pat Meyer the Buffalo Bills offensive line coach, and Gerald Alexander the Minnesota Vikings pass game coordinator/secondary coach.
