The Dolphins signed Zack Kuntz
Following the season, the Miami Dolphins have begun making roster moves as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 season. Miami is set to have over 20 unrestricted free agents, and with some players on large contracts, they may shed some of their most productive players of the previous seasons.
The Dolphins do possess some high-end talent despite winning only seven games in 2025. Linebacker Jordyn Brooks and center Aaron Brewer both received All-Pro selections, while running back De’Von Achane made his first Pro Bowl in 2025. Additionally, the team features Jaylen Waddle, who has had three 1,000-yard seasons. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, there is a steep decline after that.
For that reason, the Dolphins may be open to taking a chance on players with high ceilings to give the team’s roster a boost. Miami announced they are doing just that, as they signed a former Jets tight end with high-end talent.
Miami Dolphins Sign Zack Kuntz
Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald announced that the Dolphins signed former Jets tight end, who was a 2023 seventh-round pick, Zack Kuntz. Kuntz failed to make the roster with the Jets, but spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons on their practice squad. He was waived prior to the 2025 season by the Jets and was then drafted in the United Football League before being signed by the Dolphins.
Kuntz came into the NFL as a raw player, with a high-upside due to his size and athleticism. Bleacher Report’s Derrick Klassen described him as “an uber-talented dice roll on a wide receiver/tight end hybrid type. He has all of the size and athletic talent in the world; he just needs a lot of work as a technician and in regard to play strength. The hope is that NFL coaching, as well as a pro strength and conditioning system, can get Kuntz to unlock his potential and become a passing-game weapon.”
The Jets coaching staff failed to unlock his potential, but now Miami will hope they can get more out of the tight end. He has made two NFL appearances in his career, but has not recorded a catch so far.
Dolphins Tight Ends Room
Kuntz is set to join a weak Dolphins tight end room. Greg Dulcich and Darren Waller, who led the room in receiving last year, are both set to be free agents this offseason. Meanwhile, Julian Hill, who is primarily known for his blocking ability, is set to be a restricted free agent. He is likely to return to the Dolphins next season.
Kuntz is not a lock to make the final roster, but with the Dolphins he likely has a greater chance of latching on than he would with a team that has more competition among tight ends. For the Dolphins, taking a chance on a 6-foot-7, 255 pound tight end seems to be a low-risk move worth doing as they head into bigger signings once free agency begins in March. He marks the second player the Dolphins have signed since hiring Jeff Hafley as their new head coach.
