Last fall, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that wide receiver Stefon Diggs chose the New England Patriots over the Denver Broncos during NFL free agency last offseason.
The four-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro confirmed that report during Super Bowl media week.
“It was close,” Diggs told KOA Radio. Diggs said he has a “lot of respect” for head coach Sean Payton, and he he’s good friends with Denver offensive coordinator Davis Webb, who was his teammate in Buffalo.
“He helped me a lot in Buffalo, as far as like, learning the plays,” Diggs said Wednesday, via the Denver Post’s Luca Evans. “… He taught me a lot of the offense. He’s a good friend of mine. I think he’s gonna be a hell of a coach one day.”
Diggs ended up signing a three-year, $69 million deal with New England, and the Broncos failed to land a high-profile receiver in 2025. Evans reported that Denver also targeted linebacker Robert Spillane during free agency, and he also opted to sign with the Patriots instead.
