Jahmal Edrine, Virginia’s second-leading receiver this past season, was arrested Thursday and charged with one count of rape and one count of abduction following a five-month investigation by the Albemarle County (Va.) Police Department.
Albermarle County police said they began their investigation on Aug. 25, a day after a victim reported being sexually assaulted and less than a week before the Cavaliers played their first game of the season against Coastal Carolina. On Monday, an Albemarle County grand jury indicted the 22-year-old Edrine, who was set to play his final college season at Virginia this coming fall.
In a statement released to Wahoos247, university associate vice president and chief communications officer Brian Coy said Edrine was no longer enrolled at Virginia and the school would fully cooperate with the ongoing police investigation.
It’s unclear when Virginia was first made aware that Edrine was being investigated. When reached by The Athletic on Friday, the public information officer for Albemarle County police deferred comment to UVA officials about when school officials were first made aware.
“Due to federal student privacy laws, we’re unable to offer comment on this case beyond what we’ve shared,” Coy said in an email to The Athletic.
Coach Tony Elliott has yet to comment on Edrine’s arrest.
Edrine, a South Florida native, caught 46 passes for 564 yards and a touchdown last season after beginning his career at Florida Atlantic in 2021. He spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons at Purdue. He is being held without bond at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, police said. It was not immediately clear if Ederine has retained an attorney.
