Adam Gase may join Mike McDaniel in LA

Following a 7-10 season, the Miami Dolphins fired head coach Mike McDaniel after four seasons. As the head coach, McDaniel led the Dolphins to the postseason in his first two seasons, which ended a playoff drought that dated back to 2016. Unfortunately, the Dolphins were unable to end their playoff win drought as they lost both of their playoff games under McDaniel.

After his dismissal, McDaniel became a popular coaching candidate around the league. The Browns, Bills, Titans, Raiders, and Ravens showed interest in McDaniel, but he withdrew from consideration for several jobs once he determined his next landing spot. McDaniel agreed to become the offensive coordinator under Jim Harbaugh with the Los Angeles Chargers, and now, it appears another former Dolphins head coach could be joining him.

Former Miami Dolphins Head Coach Likely to Join Mike McDaniel

CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported that former Dolphins head coach Adam Gase has emerged as a possibility to join Mike McDaniel’s offensive staff with the Chargers. His role would be as an offensive assistant.

In 2016, the Miami Dolphins hired Adam Gase to become their new head coach. Not unlike McDaniel, Gase was hired with the intent of helping develop first-round quarterback Ryan Tannehill. With the Dolphins, Gase started slowly as he began his tenure 1-4; however, an improbable turnaround resulted in the Dolphins reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

Things quickly turned for Gase and the Dolphins as the team followed up its playoff appearance with consecutive losing seasons, and Gase was dismissed. He ended his tenure with a 23-25 record in three seasons. After being fired, Gase landed another head coaching job, this time with the New York Jets. He failed to have success in New York, going 9-23 in two seasons before being fired.

He has not held an NFL coaching role since being fired from the Jets after the 2020 season. Prior to being the Dolphins head coach, he served as the offensive coordinator for the Peyton Manning-led Denver Broncos and the Chicago Bears. With Chicago, he helped Jay Cutler achieve the best passer rating of his career, something he failed to replicate after Cutler joined the Dolphins.

Miami Dolphins Coaching Staff

The Dolphins will hope their new coaching staff, led by head coach Jeff Hafley, will have more success than the pairing of two former Miami head coaches in Los Angeles. Under Hafley, the team has nearly finalized its staff. They promoted senior pass-game coordinator Bobby Slowik to offensive coordinator. Hafley brought Sean Duggan over from Green Bay, despite Packers head coach Matt LaFleur’s preference to retain him , and made him the new defensive coordinator for the Dolphins.

The team is still in search of their quarterbacks coach, as they had reached an agreement with former Denver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett, but he left after a week to take the offensive coordinator role in Arizona. Previous quarterbacks coach Darrell Bevell remains a possibility, who worked with offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik in the 2025 season.
