GREEN BAY (WLUK) — One of the most memorable moments of Green Bay hosting last month’s NFL Draft came on the first night when Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy announced the Packers first round selection of Matthew Golden.
FOX 11 recently sat down with Murphy for an exclusive interview to reflect on the 2025 NFL Draft for the “FOX 11 Draft 25: Touchdown in Titletown” special that will air Monday at 9:30 p.m. on FOX 11.
We asked Murphy what it was like announcing the selection of Golden.
Oh I was very honored to be selected to do that. I was very glad he had a name that was very easy to announce. I didn’t want to screw it up. While I knew I was going to do it, the first pick, our first pick. I told Brian, “Don’t think about me. If we need to trade out of the first round because that’s the best thing to do, do that.” I went a little bit off script. One of the things that really stood out to me was how closely our fans follow college football, follow the draft As soon as I said for the first time since 2002, I think almost all our fans knew we were going to draft a wide receiver and I think almost all of them knew it was going to be Matthew Golden. That was really fun to be a part of that moment.
FOX 11 asked Murphy if announcing the Golden selection was his favorite moment of the three-day event.
“Yeah, that was kind of fun to see the reaction of the crowd,” said Murphy. “Let’s hope he ends up being a really good player because then it will really end up being my favorite moment.”
Murphy says it was also really fun to see the Packers’ fourth round selection of Barryn Sorrell, who was in Green Bay for the draft.
I was in the draft room and I saw we were going to draft him. Suddenly we all realized he’s here. We didn’t know that he was still in Green Bay and around the stadium. That was really exciting. The excitement he saw was unbelievable. It’s funny, one of the things I thought about during that whole, especially watching Golden and Sorrell and how excited they were, there was a time in the 70s and 80s when no one wanted to come to Green Bay. Players when they were drafted by Green Bay, they viewed it as a place you don’t want to go. It’s really exciting to see how different that is now. A lot of it is Lambeau Field. It is such an iconic stadium. I think players are really excited about the opportunity to play games here.
FOX 11’s full interview with Murphy will go live on the WLUK-TV FOX 11 YouTube channel on Sunday.
