NEENAH (WLUK) — When you walked into a conference room at the Bridgewood Hotel in Neenah Sunday, you’d find Packers’ fans across generations surrounded by signed collectibles.
What would jump out to you next, would be three former Packers signing autographs and taking photos.
Kicker Chester Marcol, defensive tackle Gilbert Brown and running back Eddie Lacy were in attendance.
Just hours before the Super Bowl kicked off Packers’ fans got an opportunity to meet the familiar faces and have a shot at team memorabilia.
However, if you dig a little bit deeper, you know that Sunday was all about helping America’s heroes find a permanent place to call home.
For more than 100 years, the American Legion Post 55 in Hortonville has been housed in the lower level of the opera house.
Now, fundraising starts for their own building.
“Now is our chance to do the kickoff and really start getting going out of our building fund,” said Bob Ziegert. Past Commander of American Legion Post 55.
The building will sit on a 2.9 acre property.
Ziegert tells us that the building will cost $2.5 million.
However, that won’t just be home for the legion.
“This is a legion that would be running the building, but this is a building for the whole Hortonville community area. Not just a plain legion. We want other nonprofits, other organizations in our community that use this building and this is for the whole community,” said Ziegert.
“To be able to do something for these guys any shape or form is awesome. Because they’re giving a life. They have given everything for us and what have we done. You see what I’m saying? And I think the turn around should be even better than what they’re getting today,” said Brown.
“To have the former Green Bay Packers come down here and support us too. They’re great ambassadors for our veterans and stuff like this,” said Ziegert.
Although fans would’ve loved to see the 2025 Packers in Santa Clara on Super Bowl Sunday, this experience was special too.
First place in the “Community Center Raffle” won a Jordan Love Salute to Service autographed helmet & framed military jersey.
Of the three Packers’ alumni, Gilbert Brown was the only Super Bowl champion.
That came in the 1996 season in a 35 to 21 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI.
