Despite Jones’ season-ending Achilles injury, it is now being confirmed that the Colts have interest in going ahead with trying to re-sign him.
If a deal comes about, it makes sense for both sides.
Daniel Jones is coming off a season in which he had a one-year deal with the Colts, leading to them needing to make a decision on if they need to bring him back or not.
This move is a bit complicated as Jones continues his recovery from a season-ending Achilles injury.
While the primary goal is a multi-year extension, the franchise tag is being considered as a potential option if a contract agreement cannot be reached before the start of free agency. The projected franchise tag for quarterbacks in 2026 is estimated to be around $47 million. This would provide the Colts with additional time to negotiate a long-term deal while ensuring Jones remains with the team for at least another season.
Before his injury, Daniel Jones was having a strong season for the Colts, playing at what many described as a Pro Bowl level. He had guided a high-powered offense and was on pace for a career year. However, a series of injuries, culminating in a torn Achilles in Week 14, ended his season prematurely. Despite the severity of the injury, a full recovery is anticipated in time for the 2026 campaign.
The Colts have faced uncertainty at the quarterback position since the retirement of Andrew Luck. With Anthony Richardson’s future with the team unclear, retaining Jones appears to be a top priority for the franchise. The upcoming free agent quarterback class is not considered particularly strong, further emphasizing the importance of securing Jones’ services.
