Goldsboro native Jarran Reed and former Carolina Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold are Super Bowl champions after Seattle’s 29-13 win in Super Bowl 60. Reed, who wore No. 90, recorded two tackles, including one for a loss, in the championship game.

Darnold finished 19-of-38 passing for 202 yards and threw a touchdown pass to AJ Barner. Seattle’s defense played a key role in the win, pressuring former UNC standout Drake Maye throughout the game. Maye threw two touchdown passes but was intercepted twice. The victory marked Seattle’s second Super Bowl title.

Darnold and Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker are scheduled to participate in postgame celebrations Monday.

Attention now turns to NASCAR, as Speedweek begins ahead of the Daytona 500, scheduled for Sunday. Team haulers are set to arrive Tuesday, followed by qualifying on Wednesday and twin qualifying races on Thursday. Two-time defending Daytona 500 champion William Byron enters the weekend looking to make history. The annual hauler parade is scheduled for Tuesday evening.

In Supercross racing, Carteret County native Cooper Webb continued his strong start to the season with a third-place finish in Arizona. The Newport native earned a podium finish at a venue where he has historically struggled. Webb now sits fourth in the Supercross points standings, 15 points behind leader Eli Tomac, as the series heads to Seattle.

College basketball also saw notable performances. NC State returns to action Monday night, traveling to Louisville after a win over Virginia Tech on Saturday. The Wolfpack carries a six-game winning streak into the matchup and is 6-1 on the road this season. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

North Carolina fans are still celebrating the Tar Heels’ win over Duke on Saturday, sealed by a game-winning shot from Seth Trimble. The victory sparked celebrations on campus and along Franklin Street. UNC now shifts focus to its next game, traveling to Miami for a matchup Tuesday night.
