The New York Jets are in the market for a new quarterback this offseason. After missing out on Justin Fields and not landing the top pick and getting a chance to take Fernando Mendoza, their options at the positions are limited.
They could wind up taking a quarterback in the NFL Draft, or they could sign a free agent like Daniel Jones or Malik Willis. But a trade is also something worth keeping an eye on.
For ESPN’s Ben Solak, while the Jets could swing a trade for a quarterback like Kyler Murray, there is one QB option he would be surprised if they went after. This QB is a $212 million veteran who the Jets are all too familiar with: Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa.
Jets trading for Tua Tagovailoa would be ‘surprise’
“The Jets do have plenty of money to acquire either Tua Tagovailoa or Kyler Murray,” Solak writes. “Given the Jets’ intradivisional familiarity with Tagovailoa’s game, I’d be surprised if they go that direction…”
While Solak does throw out the caveat that in new offensive coordinator Frank Reich’s offense, Tagovailoa wouldn’t be a bad fit, the reality is the Jets are too familiar with Tagovailoa.
They’ve seen his highs and lows more than most other teams in the league. And while he’s going to land on a new team this offseason, the Jets, barring the chance to scoop him up for a veteran minimum in free agency, likely won’t have interest.

Acquiring a player from your division rival is cutting despite the financial aspect being a massive deterrent to such a move is never a good idea.
Yes, the Jets need to add a quarterback this offseason. But adding someone like Tagovailoa wouldn’t give the Jets much upside, especially since they know his ceiling well.
Tagovailoa is a bridge quarterback, one who can win a few games every year. But, with how shaky the Jets roster is, and how inconsistent Tagovailoa has been, the Jets should not go after the Dolphins’ $212 million quarterback.
Even signing him as a free agent for the minimum might be met with scrutiny. The Jets have little reason to settle for Tagovailoa in free agency, let alone a trade where the Jets would be giving the Dolphins a massive hand by swinging a deal.
