CLEVELAND, Ohio (TheOBR.com) Good morning, Cleveland Browns fans!
THE DAILY BLOVIATION
The continued rudeness of the Cleveland Browns’ news cycle bothers me. I have a set pattern of activities on a normal day. I wake up, bloviate this weirdness, and then plow into a long list of daily tasks. But a little after 6PM, I stop working, have dinner and try to relax for a few hours before crashing and starting the whole process over again. I do this nearly every day. It’s a routine, but we old guys need routines.
Imagine my annoyance when news broke that the Cleveland Browns had hired a new special teams coordinator while I was eating dinner and trying to disconnect. The moment came and went, and I was oblivious to it while I was disconnected from my phone. I do disconnect from my phone at times. I’m not Adam Schefter, after all. If I were, I’d be younger and better paid.
When I was younger, this would have caused a great deal of stress. But I let it go, because I’m old enough to realize that breaking news updates are generally captured almost instantly in the Watercooler, and if I’m not available to write about it, the world will somehow survive. And indeed, it was linked almost immediately in the Cooler, by the perspicacious and awesome Cooper7.
The new guy is Byron Storer, a special teams lifer who is relatively young at 41 and went straight into coaching after a brief NFL career. He’s been grinding since being hired by the Buccaneers in 2010, passing through San Diego and Oakland and linking up with Packers special teams guru Rich Bisaccia. He met Biasacci in Tampa Bay and has been his right-hand man with him in Green Bay since 2022. He now gets a chance to run his own special teams unit. His rep is that he’s developed some ace special teams players, like All-Pro returner Keisean Nixon, AJ Cole, and Daniel Carlson.
He’s got quite the challenge ahead of him in Cleveland, fixing a unit that was horrible over the last two seasons. How much of this was due to the lack of special teams aces on the roster and how much was coaching is still unknown, but Bubba Ventrone clearly did not develop this roster, particularly on the coverage side.
DUCE GETS TO STAY: The Cleveland Browns are going to retain running backs coach Duce Staley, who helped Quinchon Judkins, Dylan Sampson, and Rocket Sanders quickly acclimate to the NFL. This will be Staley’s third season in Cleveland. Assistant OL coach Sanders Davis will also return.

QB STORIES APLENTY: There was a strange outbreak of quarterback stories in today’s newswire, a sure sign that folks are getting bored with the slow coaching search. From Zac Jackson mocking Garrett Nussmeier to the Browns in the second round to Deshaun Watson’s determination to return to relevancy, Browns quarterbacks were all the rage.
Todd Monken admitted that he was ‘intrigued” by Watson, unlike most Browns fans, who are intrigued by the idea of Watson leaving town. Supposedly, there’s eagerness to see what fully healthy Watson can do as Monken takes a fresh look at the position in his first year as Browns head coach and offensive brainiac. Meanwhile, Ben Solak picks the Browns to land Malik Willis as their next guy over teams like the Dolphins and Steelers. ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi also looks at the QB quandary.
Have a good one! GO BROWNS!
