Experience continues to be an emphasis for New York Giants coach John Harbaugh as he builds his staff. The latest veteran addition is Brian Callahan, who is being hired as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, according to team and league sources.

Callahan was most recently the Tennessee Titans’ head coach; he was fired in October, six weeks into his second season in Tennessee. Before that, the 41-year-old spent five seasons as the Cincinnati Bengals’ offensive coordinator, working closely with Joe Burrow as the 2020 No. 1 pick developed into one of the top quarterbacks in the league.

Callahan has experience as a quarterbacks coach, holding that role with the Oakland Raiders in 2018 and with the Detroit Lions in 2016 and 2017. He got his start as an NFL assistant with the Denver Broncos from 2010 to 2015.

Callahan interviewed for the Giants’ offensive coordinator job, which went to Matt Nagy. Nagy arrives in New York with five seasons of offensive-coordinator experience with the Kansas City Chiefs and four years as the Chicago Bears’ head coach. Harbaugh’s offensive staff also includes running backs coach Willie Taggart, who has 13 years of experience as a college head coach; tight ends coach Tim Kelly, who has four years of experience as NFL offensive coordinator; offensive line coach Mike Bloomgren, who has seven years of experience as a college head coach and five years of experience as a college offensive coordinator; and senior offensive assistant Greg Roman, who has 12 years of experience as an NFL offensive coordinator.

Callahan’s father, Bill, is a legendary offensive line coach. Bill Callahan was on his son’s staff in Tennessee, but he won’t be coming to New York; he already joined Kevin Stefanski’s Atlanta Falcons staff. Bloomgren worked under Bill Callahan from 2008 to 2010 with the Jets.
