New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr addresses injury during church service

Joining us now, WDSU Saints analyst James Hirsch. James, I don’t know where you were on Friday. I was at French Quarter Fest and the Derek Carr Bombshell news changed my plans for the entire evening. Just your take, the report from the NFL Network that he’s dealing with *** shoulder issue and if it requires surgery, it could cost him all of 2025. I’ve got some thoughts, but I want yours first. Yeah, I’m not going to speculate on, um, you know, when it happened, what happened, what it is, how serious it is. Um, I’m, I’m very sure that the Saints have answers to all of those questions that, that we’re wondering about. Um, Derek, look, Derek is *** great person. He’s, he’s. stand-up guy, uh, he’s *** class act. I’m sure he’s been upfront and honest about it. The timing, however, is, is shocking. It’s, it’s very unfortunate for the team. Uh, the team committed to him as being the, the starting quarterback and, and as experienced as he is, um. The Saints needed something big out of him. They needed *** big year to put up big numbers and lead this team to *** place they haven’t been in 3 years. And without him, I really think it changes the entire strategy moving forward for the upcoming draft for this season. Um, the Saints really are *** moving target right now that everyone’s trying to put their thumb on. All right, I know you don’t want to delve into conspiracy theories, but I will. I certainly think the timing of this right. Before offseason training starts, all the chatter about him maybe wanting to be released, maybe wanting to be traded, and the Saints kept him for one more year. Do you at least understand, even if you don’t want to swim in those waters with me, that if he’s not part of their future, maybe it’s better for him not to be *** part of the present and, and give himself *** chance next year at free agency. You at least potentially understand that argument, right? Oh, absolutely, um, it, it makes complete sense. If you know that you’re not *** part of the future 234 years from now, um, why, quote unquote, waste your time, uh, spending one season somewhere where you know you’re not wanted? I, I totally understand that and it makes sense. Um, you know, I like, as the optimist, I like to think that both Derek and the team, you know, could have figured something out that, that both parties agreed on and, and hopefully that’s not the case that we’re looking at. But the reality is, you know, if he’s not going to play, um, the Saints, the Saints have to have an answer at the most important position on the field. So if you look at free agency again, we talked about the timing of this. *** lot of quality backup quarterbacks and guys looking for that second chance. Zach Wilson went to Miami, Mac Jones went to San Francisco. Trey Lance went to the Chargers. Those guys have been gobbling. Justin Fields went to the Jets. Besides Aaron Rodgers, and I don’t know if he has interest in the Saints at 42 years old, um, he may want more of *** win now situation if he even wants to play football. It’s pretty thin. I mean, do they go with Spencer Rattler? Do they draft the guy? I, I, I don’t even know where they go at this point at the most important position on the field. I’m right there with you. Um, many, many top options that you just listed, uh, Jameis Winston, right, is another one who, who has experience in New Orleans, who, who loves the city, um, who We, we know how the locker room feels about *** Jameis Winston, right? And um you’ve lost those opportunities with, with so many top players at that position. Um, it, it’s, it’s unfortunate, but, um, but here we are. There’s, there’s not *** lot of people out there. You got the guys on the roster, you got the draft coming up with *** good pick, *** place where you can pick *** solid quarterback. Um, my biggest issue is. It looked like the Saints were were going with *** win down mentality, resigning, uh, restructuring some older players, keeping them in the locker room, on the team, and keeping Derek Carr at quarterback, um, but now that you don’t have him. It seems like the best move is to move on, to move forward, to reset, but you’re no longer in *** position to be able to do that. So, so I don’t know where they go. I think the draft is the answer, but there’s really not many answers to even discuss. It seems like the draft or your current roster is the only only place to go. Yeah, and just final question here, just kind of as somebody who was in the league for 10 years and understands kind of how things work, how hard of *** situation are the Saints in now? Look, they may have loved the. Quarterback at number 9. And even if Derrick was going to be here, they may have drafted Shadoor Sanders or Jackson Daard at number 9, and it doesn’t change their board whatsoever. But knowing that Spencer and Jay Canner and Ben Dennucci are the only quarterbacks on the roster and the only ones that may be in that building, are they almost in *** position where they are forced? And I know teams hate that, where they are forced to address *** need, especially at the quarterback position in the draft. I, I think they’re forced 100%. Uh, unfortunately, that’s, that’s where they are with, um, the depth that they have on the roster at the position isn’t great. Um, you know, none of those guys have, have taken advantage of an opportunity and proven that they can be *** reliable, successful. Backup, um, not to mention you’re talking about again, the most important position on the football team and you’re gonna, you’re gonna expect to fill that void with *** rookie and rookie quarterbacks and many other positions. You might as well flip *** coin. I mean, it’s, it’s so hard to know. Uh, what you’re going to get, it’s an inexact science, but that’s where we find ourselves. Uh, pick number 9, and now the teams know the Saints are going to be desperate, it’s gonna be even harder to trade up, if you feel like that’s something you have to do to get the guy that you want, but they’re handing the sport I do think they’re going to have to select *** quarterback. All right, James, if nothing else, the Saints. We are definitely not boring this offseason. We have kept you busy and we appreciate your insight. I’m going to leave you with this thought, if that’s OK. I don’t think any of us need to book *** trip to San Francisco next February, where this roster stands right now for Super Bowl 60. Does that sound fair? That sounds fair. We’re gonna need, we’re gonna need some fireworks to happen, uh, before, before anyone gets online and books *** flight. All right, James, thank you very much. We appreciate your time. Thank you. Yeah, I know the timing of
