Mitch Trubisky, Josh Allen and Joe Brady have worked well together.

The Buffalo Bills have an MVP quarterback in Josh Allen and are hoping to retain one of his most trusted teammates for 2026.

The Buffalo News reported the Bills are hoping to bring back Mitchell Trubisky, who is slated to become a free agent next month.

Trubisky, the second overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft with the Chicago Bears who will turn 32 in August, has not started a game in three seasons over two terms with the Bills, since Allen owns the league’s longest active games-started streak (135).

Trubisky had 313 yards and four touchdowns in four games in 2025.

The Buffalo Bills Want to Re-Sign Mitchell Trubisky

Some might feel Trubisky is easily replaceable. Though often banged up, Allen rarely misses time even in practice, and the Bills could consider a younger and potentially cheaper option than Trubisky, despite his measly $2.75 million AAV the past two years.

Yet, Jay Skurski of the Buffalo News spelled out what makes Trubisky so appealing.

“While his contributions on the field have been minimal, Trubisky is a trusted sounding board for Allen, both during the practice week and on the sideline during games,” Skurski reported. “After every offensive drive, Allen takes a seat on the bench directly next to Trubisky, and the two break down the previous possession.”

After his first season in Buffalo, 2021, Trubisky spent two years with the Pittsburgh Steelers primarily backing up Kenny Pickett. He played 12 games, and started seven, before coming back to Buffalo for the past two years.

According to Skurski, Trubisky has enjoyed his time in Western New York.

“Trubisky has come to love being in Buffalo,” Skurski reported. “His presence in the locker room is important to the fabric of the team, and the trust Allen has in him can’t be overstated.”

Mitchell Trubisky May Want to Move On

Trubisky had to ward off a challenge from Mike White during training camp to even win the backup quarterback job this year, and Trubisky’s quotes sound like someone who may want to see what other opportunities are available to him.

“Figuring out if I can get back or if there is another situation out there for me, we’ll see,” Trubisky told reporters at locker-clean out day. “But I definitely love it here and am grateful for my time. It’s been awesome.”

Though his days of being a starting QB are far behind him, Trubisky clearly is valuable as a de facto QBs coach and could find a more lucrative situation mentoring a young first-time starter. The Tennessee Titans, with budding second-year QB Cam Ward with former Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll who worked with Trubisky in 2021, could be alluring.

A situation like that could also invite more playing time, especially if there’s an injury. Trubisky has made just 69 pass attempts in his three seasons with the Bills.

Even if Trubisky moves on, he has appreciated being a part of the Bills.

“I’m just proud of them. It’s a special group,” Trubisky said. “Great relationships, will last the rest of my life, for sure. Just want everybody to continue to keep their chins up, hold them high and just continue to work hard, because it’s just going to make us into better people and better teammates and players moving forward.”
