One of the bigger problems for the Green Bay Packers this past season came from the secondary. Green Bay was able to generate all sorts of pressure in the backfield, or getting to the quarterback, but when the ball was in the air, the team struggled a little.

Entering the NFL offseason, addressing the secondary, specifically the cornerback position, is likely going to be a priority for this organization. The Packers still have dreams of winning another Super Bowl with this core group, so the pressure will certainly be on the front office this summer.

This defensive unit will be getting star pass rusher Micah Parsons back from injury at some point during the year, but Green Bay can’t fully bank on him. Parsons is coming off a torn ACL, and it can sometimes take players a while to fully get back to pre-injury status.

The front office needs to add at least two pieces to the defense, with the secondary being the glaring weak spot. Green Bay has shown a willingness to spend in recent offseasons, so we could see this mindset play out once again.

But who the team targets remains a mystery, and will likely determine how aggressive the franchise wants to be. However, the Packers do have a team that can compete seriously for a Super Bowl, and they can’t afford to waste another year with this group.

Jaylen Watson to the Green Bay Packers?

One option for the Packers to consider going after in free agency is veteran cornerback Jaylen Watson of the Kansas City Chiefs. After being taken in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Watson has carved out a very nice career for himself, and he should get paid this offseason.

In his first year as a full-time starter, Watson didn’t disappoint, posting two interceptions, two sacks, and 64 tackles for Kansas City. This year, Pro Football Focus ranked Watson as the No. 16-ranked cornerback in the NFL, showing his upside for the future.

Watson could easily slide in as one of the starters for the Packers, giving this team an experienced player in the secondary. Green Bay needs guys like this, especially playing in a city that expects Super Bowl titles year after year.

After playing in so many playoff games for the Chiefs, Watson brings experience at the highest level of the sport, and he could use this to his advantage. In 10 career postseason games with Kansas City, Watson has recorded two interceptions, showing impressive ability to step up when the lights are brightest.

Kansas City is dealing with a tough financial situation as the offseason gets going, and many don’t expect Watson to return to the team next year. This could open the door for an organization such as the Packers to swoop in and land an emerging star in the league, while also helping to solidify the defense for next season.
