As the 2026 NFL free-agency period approaches, one name beginning to swirl in leaguewide rumors is former Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been mentioned as one of the best potential landing spots. After nine seasons in Cleveland, the 29-year-old playmaker confirmed via social media that he is moving on and will test the open market come March.
Njoku, a physical and versatile tight end who once posted Pro Bowl numbers in 2023, struggled with injuries and reduced production in 2025, finishing the year with 33 receptions for 293 yards and four touchdowns. Over the course of his Browns tenure, he amassed 384 receptions and 34 touchdowns.
While analysts have spotlighted traditional suitors like the Atlanta Falcons, Washington Commanders, and New York Giants for Njoku’s services, the Buccaneers have quietly surfaced as a dark-horse option. With tight end Cade Otton scheduled for free agency, and a lack of production from the rest of the tight end room. Adding a proven pass-catcher like Njoku would not only bolster the tight end room but also provide a rugged seam threat and red-zone target for Baker Mayfield.
Strategically, Njoku’s blend of size, athleticism, and blocking ability fits the multifaceted role the Bucs have asked of tight ends in recent offensive schemes, especially one under new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, who had Kyle Pitts see his best season in his NFL Career, and would reunite Njoku and Mayfield, who shared time in Cleveland. While the Bucs’ wide receiver corps remains talented, their tight end depth could use an injection of proven production, especially if Otton departs.
If Tampa Bay is serious about re-establishing its identity in a competitive NFC South, targeting David Njoku could make sense. Whether he ultimately sees Tampa as his next home remains to be seen, but the fit checks both schematic and opportunity boxes.
