Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur could lose defensive assistant DeMarcus Covington to the Las Vegas Raiders.
The NFL coaching carousel has slowed with every head coach position now filled. But there’s plenty of top assistant roles still vacant. Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur could potentially lose another assistant to one of those openings.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Saturday morning the Las Vegas Raiders are considering Packers defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington for their open defensive coordinator position. Covington also served as the Packers run game coordinator in 2025.
The Raiders plan to interview the Packers assistant.
Covington was in his first season on LaFleur’s staff with the Packers during the 2025 campaign. Prior to that, Covington coached with the New England Patriots from 2017-24.
Under previous Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, Covington filled a variety of roles. He was a coaching assistant to start from 2017-18. New England won its sixth Super Bowl title during the 2018 campaign.
Covington then served as outside linebackers coach in 2019 and then defensive line coach from 2020-23.
He remained on the Patriots staff as defensive coordinator under Jerod Mayo in 2024.
Matt LaFleur Could Lose Another Packers Assistant
Despite a very disappointing end to the 2025 campaign, the Packers signed LaFleur to a contract extension this offseason. But there’s still major change coming to the Green Bay coaching staff.
A big reason why was former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley became the Miami Dolphins head coach. Several Green Bay assistants followed Hafley to Miami.
With Covington’s interview, LaFleur could lose another assistant.
