Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim opened up on her relationship with Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett after coming up just short of gold in Italy.

Kim settled for silver in the women’s snowboard halfpipe after being overtaken on the final run by 17-year-old Choi Ga-on of South Korea. Choi posted a winning score of 90.25 in the third and final round, edging Kim’s best score of 88.00 and capturing gold. Japan’s Mitsuki Ono took bronze.

Kim entered the Games as the two-time defending Olympic champion in halfpipe, having won gold in Pyeongchang in 2018 — where she became the youngest women’s Olympic halfpipe winner — and again in Beijing in 2022. A victory in Italy would have made her the first snowboarder, male or female, to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals in the same event.

Despite coming up short, Kim was in good spirits after capturing silver. That was partly due to having Garrett by her side. The Browns’ record-setting pass-rusher attended her events in Italy.

“I mean it’s so fun,” Kim said on The Today Show. “He’s truly my best friend. He’s such an amazing addition to my support system. It’s very special, cause I feel like he gets it, he gets what it’s like to be in this position, he gets what it’s like to be an athlete. He understands the pressure and all of that. So, he’s been an amazing person, and, yeah, he’s my rock, my best friend, I’m excited.”

Browns DE Myles Garrett ‘Silent Competitor’ in Relationship

Garrett is one of the NFL’s most dominant defenders, and his competitiveness shows up on nearly every snap. Off the field, though—especially in his relationship with Kim—that edge comes through in a much quieter way.

“In our relationship, I think he’s more of a silent competitor,” Kim said. “He’s really competitive, but he won’t say it out loud. I’m like, ‘I will beat you in this game right here, right now.’ We played backgammon before the final and he got me there—but we definitely need a rematch.”

Garrett has played for the Browns for the entirety of his nine-year career. The team has made the postseason just twice over that span. While he’s racked up individual accolades, Garrett has made it clear that his desire is to compete for the Super Bowl.

“I’m committed to winning, and long as the team organization are doing so and they’re committed to that same thing, then I’m all on board,” Garrett said at the end of the season. “But if we’re thinking anything other than winning – tanking or rebuilding, that’s not me.”

Browns Searching for Next Defensive Coordinator

The Browns went 5-12 last season, but the defense wasn’t the issue. The unit allowed just 283.6 yards and 22.3 points per game. Garrett piled up 23 sacks — an NFL single-season record.

But the defense will be under new leadership next season following the hiring of Todd Monken. Following the hire, defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz issued his resignation.

But for Monken, he’s putting the focus more on the players like Garrett, who he had to game plan for twice a year while with the Baltimore Ravens.

When I was preparing for the Cleveland Browns, I wasn’t trying to chip Jim Schwartz, I was chipping Myles Garrett,” Monken said. “And when I was sliding a protection to the outside backers or Grant Delpit that were blitzing off the edge, I was sliding the protection of the players. And when I was worried about throwing to the right against Denzel Ward or Tyson Campbell to the left, that’s who I was worried about throwing at.”
