Former Washington and Cleveland Browns offensive lineman Tre’ Johnson died Sunday, his wife announced in a social media post. He was 54.

Johnson died “suddenly and unexpectedly” during a family trip, Irene Johnson wrote in a Facebook post. No cause of death was given.

“His four children, Chloe, EJ, EZ and Eden, extended family, friends, and I are devastated and in shock,” Irene wrote. “We will miss him so much.”

Johnson played nine seasons in the NFL from 1994-2002, including eight seasons with Washington and one season with the Browns.

The 6-foot-2, 328-pound Johnson was drafted out of Temple in the second round of the 1994 NFL Draft and played his first seven seasons in Washington, earning a Pro Bowl selection and Second Team All-Pro honors in 1999.

After seven seasons in Washington, Johnson signed with the Browns in 2001, but appeared in only three games that season before being placed on season-ending injured reserve. He returned to Washington for one final NFL season in 2002.

Following his NFL career, Johnson became a history teacher at the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland, according to Irene. However, she said that recent health issues forced him to take a leave of absence from teaching.
