Team expected to keep Spencer Rattler as backup behind Tyler Shough

  • February 16, 2026

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The New Orleans Saints could receive draft compensation if quarterback Derek Carr returns from retirement and is traded to another franchise.

Tyler Shough is the Saints QB1 for the foreseeable future. But what does the team do with backup Spencer Rattler.

Also, if Derek Carr returns, what can the Saints get in a trade for the previously retired QB.

Carr’s potential return could net the Saints a third, fourth or fifth-round draft pick in a trade. Possible destinations include the Arizona Cardinals, where the Kyler Murray quarterback situation has struggled, or teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers or Minnesota Vikings.

The Vikings, led by head coach Kevin O’Connell and with J.J. McCarthy at quarterback, could provide a favorable situation for Carr. The Miami Dolphins, with a new head coach, represent another potential landing spot.

Rattler expected to remain

The Saints are expected to retain backup quarterback Spencer Rattler, who has two years remaining on his contract at $1 million per year.

“He’s a starting quarterback in the league,” wide receiver Chris Olave said of Rattler during end-of-season press conferences.

However, Rattler is viewed as a backup behind starting quarterback Tyler Shough. The Saints are unlikely to receive significant trade value for Rattler, making his retention on an affordable contract the preferred option.

The team will focus on building around Shuck as the starting quarterback heading into the NFL Combine and free agency period.
