This offseason, the Miami Dolphins are looking to completely retool their entire roster. They’ve already cut Tyreek Hill, Bradley Chubb, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, and James Daniels.
More could be on the way, and the big domino waiting to drop is quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. He could be cut like the four they’ve already released, or he could be traded. But, whatever means the Dolphins use, Tagovaialoa isn’t likely to be on the roster in 2026.
The Dolphins need a new quarterback, and as ESPN’s Matt Bowen noted, the Dolphins are the best fit for free agent Green Bay Packers quarterback Malik Willis to reunite with Jon-Eric Sullivan and Jeff Hafley in Miami this offseason.
Dolphins best free agent fit for Malik Willis this offseason
“New coach Jeff Hafley and new GM Jon-Eric Sullivan know Willis well from their shared time in Green Bay, and Willis could slot in as the new starter under coordinator Bobby Slowik,” Bowen writes. “Willis’ development in Green Bay creates upside for the Dolphins.”
Miami needs to figure out its quarterback room for 2026, and if Tagovailoa isn’t a part of it, they will need to draft, sign, and/or trade for one.
While someone like Kyler Murray or Kirk Cousins could be options, none would be as good a fit in Miami as Willis.
The Packers connection Willis has to the new Dolphins GM and head coach is one clear link, but the other important factor behind this fit making a ton of sense is the upside he brings.

If Willis can continue building on the promise he showed in 2025, when he went 30-35 for 422 yards and three touchdowns, the Dolphins could be landing a franchise quarterback this offseason.
But, even if he doesn’t pan out, the Dolphins will be well-equipped to move on from him in the future. As Bowen notes, the upside is high, and any team in need of a quarterback should take a long look at Willis.
And for Willis himself, there might not be a better fit than in Miami, where the stakes are a bit lower, and he will get the chance to play alongside De’Von Achane and Jaylen Waddle in what could be a very fun offense in 2026.
